Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) – Pier Paolo Pasolini

Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (original title)

Summary:  In the northern Italian state of Salo, four fascists select 9 boys and 9 girls to take to a remote mansion in order to subject them to physical, mental and sexual torture for 120 days for their own pleasure.  Four middle-aged women, also invited to the mansion along with guards and servants, retell arousing stories in a selected room to contain all guests, whilst one plays the piano so the torture can begin during and after this daily event.  The film is based on Les 120 journées de Sodome ou l’école du libertinage by the Marquis de Sade and was inspired by Dante’s Inferno: the Anteinferno, the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Shit and the Circle of Blood and so is split into four sections depicting this.

My review:  This is the worst film I’ve ever seen.  Quite a statement I know, but with my hand on my heart I tell you the truth.  It’s also the first film I’ve seen which made me feel like I shouldn’t be watching it – almost switching it off more than once.  So naturally, I was debating if I should put this film on the blog and even felt uncomfortable writing the summary above (if you’ve seen the film maybe you’ll understand where I’m coming from.)  The scenes and story are disgusting, sickening and I will not go into any detail.  Somehow the film received artisitc merit for its themes in political corruption (the four fascists are rich men in power), abuse of power, sadism, perversion, sadism and fascism – which is the reason why I decided to put the film on here.  However, I disagree with this praise and believe the director (Pier Paolo Pasolini) wanted to sicken viewers regardless of its themes and he possibly took pleasure in making a film like this himself.  Pasolini was actually murdered before the film’s release by being ran over several times, by his own car.  If that’s not the weirdest death than I don’t know what is.  Don’t watch this film.
